So we are going to spend 800 billion on an economic stimulus. But here's an idea, and I'm only half joking when I propose this...why not give every man, woman and child in the US one million dollars? One caveat would be that any overdue debt would have to be paid off and then the individual would get the balance left. That would be around 300 million dollars, not even a dent in the stimulus package. Spit in the ocean, if you will. Right away, all the money spent for unemployment assistance is gone. The banks would be loving it. The car industry would be saved. All kinds of good things would happen, and for a fraction of the cost of the stimulus bill.
So to you economists out there - why wouldn't this work?

Because 1 million dollars times 300 milliion people = 300 TRILLION dollars, or around 350 times the size of the stimulus bill.
And now you see why I'm an English teacher:)
But it really made me happy for a while!
Your theory reminds me of the times when you read about Lotto winners who file for bankruptcy (sp?). People who are in hock are there for a reason. It's like having an alcoholic for a bartender. It never ends well.
I like your idea. Where do I sign-up?
you know, when you look at how much $ AIG has gotten, combine that with the stimulus bill, and I think that would fund my plan...
